Here’s a stacked composite of the International Space Station (ISS) pass over London at 20:30 UTC <acronym title="August 31, 2010">tonight</acronym>.</p>

Unfortunately, I missed tonight&#8217;s fly over between 17:41:57 and 17:48:47 GMT when the ISS passed only a few degrees south of the Moon.</p>
<p>Fortunately, freezing out on the roof terrace wasn&#8217;t a complete waste of time as I managed to take the following shot of the crescent Moon [click to embiggen].</p>

<p>In the photo above, 25% of the surface is illuminated. At the time, the Moon was at the distance of 400,438 km only a few hours after reaching the <acronym>apogee</acronym> (January 20, 2010 at 14:55 GMT). Chromatic aberration, caused by the failure of the primary lens to focus all colors to the same point due to different refractive index for different wavelengths of light, is noticeable on the edges (green in the bottom left, red in bottom right, and blue in top right) but quite obvious in <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.scibuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/moon-1200-900-640x480.jpg" target="_blank" rel="lightbox[1797]">the original (uncropped) image</a> [~2mb] with the resolution of 4272px x 2848px.</p>
<p>As there is no need for colors in lunar images, I was quite happy to &#8220;correct&#8221; the chromatic aberration by setting the image [click to embiggen] to gray-scale:</p>

<p>As I was watching the Space Shuttle Endeavour launch NASA TV live coverage, I stepped briefly outside and took a few photos of the ISS fly-b. My tripod obviously isn&#8217;t that good with long(er) exposures so this time made a series of 2s takes as well.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <acronym title="International Space Station">ISS</acronym> made another pass over London. Once again, after almost <a title="ISS Above London 2" href="http://www.scibuff.com/2009/03/21/iss-above-london-2/">two months</a>, my Nokia N96 was ready to capture the event.</p>
<p>Currently, we are almost at the end of ca 40 day period during which the <acronym title="International Space Station">ISS</acronym> is visible in London either shortly after the sunset or just before the sunrise. The last visible pass until June 22 will be on Tuesday, May 26 with maximum -0.2mag at 21:23 <acronym title="British Summer Time">BST</acronym> (UT+1). However, today was the last time the station reached -2.4mag until 03:57 <acronym title="British Summer Time">BST</acronym> on June 29. The animated sequence below shows the ISS around the time of maximum visual brightness passing through the constellations of Gemini, Cancer and Leo Minor (no stars are visible).</p>

<p>The ISS will make a several great appearances over London in the next few days ( 7 passed brighter than -2.0 mag in the next week). The next visible pass during which the station will reach -2.3mag, will occur tomorrow at 19:47:52 UT. Monday offers two remarkable fly-overs (starting at 18:39:41UT and 20:15:08UT) each reaching -2.3 mag.
